For sale, an English Regency Double Fusee Bracket Clock with 8” Dial by Barwise London

The stepped mahogany case has a moulded arch cornice over fluted pilasters & brass detailing with ornate lions head handles and pierced brass fretwork to the sides all mounted on four brass ball feet. Both original keys remain with the case.

The 8” dial signed Barwise London with wonderfully ornate blue steel hands supports an engraved swan neck double fusee movement with striking hourly bell.

John Barwise is one of the most famous of London clockmakers. Born in Cockermouth, Northumberland, he set up his business in London’s St Martin’s Lane during the 1790’s and eventually dies there in 1820. In 1805, he was one of fifteen clockmakers selected by the Board of Longitude to adjudicate over a dispute between John Arnold and Thomas Earnshaw over the respective benefits of their chronometers and in the years following, the firm served numerous members of royalty. They finally achieved the Royal Warrant from George IV following his accession to the throne in 1820. The firm became Barwise & Son in 1816 after John’s sons joined the business which reflects a slightly earlier date for the antique clock.
