Elegant gilt Four glass Mantel clock
A highly decorative late 19th century bi-metallic French mantel antique clock by Japy Freres, the movement set in a gilded stepped case mounted with silver fretwork columns and friezes, and with bevelled glasses to the four sides.
The 3½ inch matt gilt dial is set with a pressed silver centre rondel to match the pendulum, and the case is surmounted with four slender bi-metallic finials and an Islamic dome. The condition of the case is superb, with a clean and bright finish. There is some very minor wear to the original mercury gilding and some occasional slight discolouration.
The eight day movement strikes the hours and the passing of the half hour on a coiled gong. The movement is signed Japy Freres et Cie, with their Grande Medal of Honour stamp, an award which they gained in 1855 and again in 1867.
According to The Clock and Watch Trademark Index of European Origin, by Karl Kochmann, “the Japy company held the top rank as a leading enterprise in the clock and watch making industry...The Japy clock movements are regarded [among the best of] French clock-making”.
