Description:
Here is a fine quality antique American Edwardian oak and leather revolving office armchair, with an Art Nouveau influence, featuring a serviced reclining and height adjustable mechanism, circa 1903, in good condition. The armchair features a curved bar back, connected to shaped arms, supported by an elegant splayed vertical high fan back (ideal for stronger back support). The chair seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain sage green leather, which has been finished with hand-tacked brass studs to the perimeter. The underside of the seat has been re-webbed in the traditional manner. The front and sides of the seat are decorated with a scroll shaped frieze. The chair sits on four splayed oak legs that terminate on the brass and mug castors. The chair mechanism has been restored and serviced and is in excellent working order. The chair incorporates a mechanism allowing it to rotate 360 degrees and recline backwards. The seat height can be adjusted by turning a ribbed metal screw on the underside of the chair. The mechanism is embossed with “Milwaukee Wisc.”, as well as showing a construction date of February 6th 1903. The chair is extremely comfortable to sit on as it features a lovely padded seat with a high back.
The armchair features a rich golden brown oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms in the home, especially the office or study as it is so comfortable. This item would certainly grace any home. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
History of Art Nouveau Period:
Dating between 1896-1914, the Art Nouveau period was known for women with long hair, flowers and curves, and so is Art Nouveau furniture. The Paris Exposition of 1900 introduced antique furniture styles reflecting what was happening in the rest of the design world, such as antique jewellery and silver. This style of furniture was not warmly embraced, as the sweeping lines were not very conducive to mass production. The French however, held it in higher esteem. Legs tend to be sweeping or cabriole.
Condition Report:
The chair and mechanism are in good working condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair frame but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The chair seat has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain olive green leather, which incorporates the traditional brass studwork tacks to the seat perimeter and traditional hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the leather is in excellent new condition, with no wear, fading or damage. The reclining and adjustable height mechanism is in good working order, having just been cleaned and serviced. There is some play to the mechanism but this is perfectly acceptable, and in line with the age of the chair. The chair features a rich medium brown oak colour, having been cleaned and polished in our workshops. The chair features brass and mug, which are also in good condition. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
