Edward Tayler RMS 1828-1906 Watercolour Portrait
We are offering for sale this charming oval watercolour portrait of a young girl by the artist Edward Tayler RMS, who has signed the painting on the edge of the oval to the lower left and dated it 1898. The young girl, who must be about three or four years of age, has mid brown hair. blue/grey eyes and is wearing a white dress with blue sash.
EDWARD TAYLER RMS was born at Orbe, Switzerland in 1828, although he was English. He was a painter of portraits and miniatures and was known as 'the father of present-day miniature painters'. He was the Hon. Treasurer and founder member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters. He exhibited from 1849 for over 50 years until his death on the 14th February 1906. He exhibited over 250 works at the Royal Academy alone, as well as at Suffolk Street, the Royal Institute, Manchester City Art Gallery, the Walker in Liverpool and many other galleries, as well as the Royal Society of Miniature Painters. He lived in London.
Biographical information about this artist may be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu, the Dictionary of British Artists, Benezit, Grant Waters' Dictionary of British Artists and Graves Dictionary, which shows that he had exhibited a total of 311 works in London exhibitions alone up to 1893 when the listings end.
Auctions records for Edward Tayler can be found at artprice.com (52 listings), artnet.com 37 and findartinfo.com 122. In Hislop's Guide to the British Art Market it shows that in 2003, 3 watercolours by this artist achieved prices ranging from £350 to £1,000. In 2004, a miniature by him achieved a hammer price of £6.500 at Bonhams, and in May 2009 a less than 2" miniature sold, also at Bonhams, for £660.
The painting is newly mounted and is framed in a 1 3/8" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
