E. Sylvia Shaw Portrait Oil Lady with Opal Earring
This is a lovely portrait oil on canvas by the artist Ellen Sylvia Shaw, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corn E. Sylvia Shaw. The painting depicts a three quarter profile portrait of an attractive young woman with a sweet expression. She has her brunette hair softly swept up and back and held in place with jewelled combs. She is wearing an evening dress of an gauzy, organza material in beige or cream, with a large pink rose in the decolletage and opal two drop earrings. The artist has managed to capture the colours of the opals brilliantly.
Ellen Sylvia Shaw was born on 21st June 1866, the eldest daughter of Frederick Arrowsmith Shaw, a Civil Servant at the Board of Trade in the marine department, and his wife Mary. Ellen never married and in most of the census records for the family, she is living with her parents and an endless number of siblings and listed as an artist in oils and watercolours. Her parents had a total of 14 children with eleven surviving. She was listed in the 1939 Register as an artist and was living alone at 19 Archway Road, London. She died in the first half of 1947 at the age of 80.
She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists as E. Sylvia Shaw, portrait and figure painter, but we notice that there was a Mrs. Ellen S. Shaw listed who exhibited 2 miniatures at the Royal Miniature Society in 1938 and 39, which we are sure is also her. Her work only rarely comes to the market, but there are 6 results on artprice.com, 3 on arcadja.com and 6 on findartinfo.com.
However, she definitely exhibited 1899-1924, 9 paintings at the Royal Academy, 3 at the Walker in Liverpool, 1 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 5 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, 11 at the Oil Painters Institute and 21 at the Society of Women Artists.
The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" softly toned silver gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 17 3/8" x 13 1/2" - 44.2cm x 34.3cm
Frame size: 24 5/8" x 20 5/8" - 62.5cm x 52.5cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is now in clean, taut condition. There are no repairs, no craquelure and only very faint stretcher marks to the sides of the canvas. The frame is new.
