Dutch Walnut & Marquetry Cabinet-on-Chest
A superb late 18th century Dutch marquetry cabinet-on-chest of rare arc-en-arbalète form. Veneered in walnut and inlaid to all sides with boxwood stringing and boxwood and fruitwood floral marquetry and inlaid faces. The cabinet with a domed top with mirrored sides and two mirrored doors opening to reveal a crimson velvet lined interior with a removable shelf. The arc-en-arbalete (cross-bow shaped) chest inlaid to the top surface and with shaped sides inlaid with vases of flowers, the frieze fitted with four graduated drawers with rococo style gilt-metal handles and escutcheons, raised on original curved and inlaid bracket feet. The drawers with replacement ‘Tubb’s Bros, London, patent lever’ locks and key.
Solid condition with a good depth of colour to the chest front and original finish, the upper part with a replacement mirror to the left side, the other mirrors foxed and velvet interior worn & marked. The chest with repaired shrinkage split to veneers on right hand side and repairs to right side front foot, fading to the upper part and sides and minor losses, marks & repairs to the inlays & walnut veneer.
