Dent Clock with Rare Escapement
A Dent of London bracket antique clock in an oak case with mirrored back panel. The movement’s base plate is mounted high in the case on two brass pillars.
The 6½ inch brass dial carries Dent’s triangle trademark within a silvered Roman chapter ring, and it has an aperture through the subsidiary seconds dial for the escapement.
The 8-day duration fusee timepiece movement employs a rare form of pivoted detent escapement, tripped by a pendulum. This escapement is visible through the skeltonised seconds dial (see the video here at ). Note that there is no recoil. The movement backplate is numbered 39872, which dates the clock to c.1882. The mirrored back and glass sides also allow other aspects of the movement to be seen.
The pendulum has a brass bob with an applied brass sunburst. Unusually, it is mounted at the front of the movement, immediately behind the dial as can be seen from the video. The effect is to make its swing more obvious, being immediately behind the glass door.
Height: 18 inches (45cms)
Width 11¾ inches (29.5cms)
Depth: 6½ inches (17cms)
Overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
