Chumleigh Devon Longcase Clock by John Marshall
Devon made 30 hour longcase clock made between 1790 and 1800 by John Marshall of Chumleigh North Devon. An oak case of slender proportions, the hood door has the pillars built into it. The case is quite unusual but as is the case with many west country antique clocks they tend to be a bit different from the rest of the UK.
The Arch top face is also of unusual proportions, but very beautifully decorated with dog roses and the arched picture is of a peacock and in the centre of the face a nice cartouche showing J marshall of Chumleigh.
The movement is very clean and works perfectly as we have now run this for a couple of weeks it will run for almost 30 hours, which is unusual as most only run for 24 hours.
We believe that John Marshall was a small scale maker and have only been able to find 2 other clocks by him. JOhn was born in Chumleigh in1745 and had a workshop in east street. His home address was Wackrells House which was left to his wife Mary following his death 24th May 1817 aged 72. We have tried to find Wackrells house but find no trace of it, whether the house doesn't exist any more or it may have been renamed. If anybody does know we would like to know more, all in al this a very nice antique clock.
We would be happy to deliver and set up this antique clock within reasonable distance
