Charles E.Rowbotham Watercolour Temple of Zeus
We are delighted to offer for sale this watercolour by the listed artist CHARLES EDMUND ROWBOTHAM, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1883. The painting depicts a view of a fallen column at the Temple of Zeus in Athens, showing how the column has segmented when it fell. There are tall poplar trees, some cacti or succulents in the foreground and distant mountains.
CHARLES EDMUND ROWBOTHAM, 1856-1921was the eldest son of Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham, the very well listed artist and the grandson of Thomas Leeson Scarse Rowbotham, also a very well listed artist, and he started his career painting figures in his father's landscapes. He painted landscapes and in particular views on the Riviera and the Italian Lakes. He used a great deal of white heightening and vivid blues. His watercolour of 'Clifton Bridge' is in Cardiff Art Gallery.
He lived in London, in Shepherd's Bush and Acton until 1888, when he moved to Steyning in Sussex. He moved to Brighton in 1889 and to Croydon in 1913, presumably until he died. Claude Hamilton Rowbotham, another listed artist was either his brother or his son.
He exhibited from 1877 until 1913, at Suffolk Street, the New Watercolour Society, the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour, The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Royal Hibernian Academy etc. Biographical information on this artist may be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, British Watercolour Artists by H. Works by this artist frequently appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, where it is listed that Bonhams in Norwich sold a collection of 27 of his works in 2003 for prices between £280 and £2,800. In 2006, 18 of his works were sold by Brightwells in Leominster for prices between £260 and £4,000. His Continental views frequently achieve prices in excess of £1,000.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" mottled gilt frame which tones very well with the painting. It is ready to hang.
