Canary 'Fledglings' Chromolithograph Cassell 1880
The captivating, extraordinarily detailed and intensely coloured and richly textured 'cage' bird chromolithographs pair offered was created by W.A. Blackston, W. Swaysland and August F. Weiner F.Z.S. They were printed in 1880 by Cassell and Company. Despite being over 140 years old the work retains tremendous vibrancy and are extremely versatile from an interiors perspective.
Chromolithography is a unique method for making multi-colour prints which became the most successful method of colour printing developed by the 19th Century. The initial technique involved the use of multiple lithographic stones, one for each colour, and whilst extremely expensive was used for the best quality results. Depending on the number of colours present, a chromolithograph could take even very skilled workers months to produce. To make this, expensive, reproduction which was once referred to as a 'chromo' a lithographer, with a finished painting in front of him, gradually created and corrected the many stones using proofs to deliver a lithograph as much as possible like the painting, sometimes using dozens of layers.
This fine lithograph has been remounted in a bespoke handmade and hand-finished quality wooden frame the confidently proportioned mount is decorated and a delicate gold beading has been used as a sophisticated contrast framing for the works. The glass is museum quality with low reflection, amazing colour intensity and high U.V. absorption to protect the work.
Chromolithograph is 22cm tall by 19cm wide. The framed lithograph is 39cm tall by 36cm wide.
The price shown does not include postage and packaging which will be quoted separately strictly at cost. The artworks can be shipped both within the UK and also internationally.
