C19th Carved High-Back Hall Chair

1 of 6
This lovely decorative hall chair looks to date from the early nineteenth century. We believe it to be of European origin, and to be constructed from some type of soft wood. The chair has a canework back panel with foliage carving. There are turned and carved columns on each side of the back panel with top finials. The chair is supported on turned and carved legs terminating in short feet with a turned decorative H-stretcher in between. The chair has a tapestry seat that probably dates from the early twentieth century, and a canework back, which is also possibly a replacement.
Condition: Overall this lovely chair is in good usuable condition, with some wear consistent with age and use. The chair is solid and usuable, but there is some movement in the joints. It has some signs of old restoration and repair - screws have been fitted at the tops of the legs at some point to strengthen them. There is some quite heavy wear to the woodwork as might be expected, and the stained finish is badly cracked, chipped and crazed. There is some wood loss to one corner of the seat frame. There is some wood shrinkage cracking to the back panel. The canework is in good condition. The tapestry seat is faded and a little grubby, but is in overall good condition with no rips or tears.
The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 111.5cm high, 45cm wide, 42.5cm deep (to maximums) 47.5cm high to seat. Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
