Boulle Postal / Letter Scale by Sampson Mordan
A fabulous and rarely found large let of Boulle postal scales, the only ones I have had are the smaller desk-top examples in Boulle by Sampson Mordan.
This is a larger example again signed by the top-notch manufacturer "Sampson Mordan & Co. London".
The base is made from solid Rosewood and then the boulle and brass trim mounted on top to produce an impressive and showy piece.
The Tortoiseshell was attached to the hardwood frame with coloured matter below (in this case red) to give this highly sought after reddish-orange colouring to these works of art. This process first developed by the French cabinetmaker, André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732, highly popular in nineteenth century Britain into the very early 20th century.
Another lovely feature is the scale pan engraved with the letter rates and incorporates the rates to "India and the Colonies" making it a more interesting example. The piece can be dated by these rates (between 1897 and 1915) this piece would date to around 1900.
The original six brass weights are intact from 6 oz down to 1/4 oz.
Lovely condition (a few tiny dents around the smooth brass trim from usage, insignificant but shown and mentioned for accuracy). 10 1/4" x 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" tall.
