Gwen May

August 1945

A rare original example of her work, the highly accomplished works of Gwen May are seldom found today. Her subjects range from views of Holland Park Mews to deeply rural subjects such as Milking Shed. Aside from her London views, she is known to have worked extensively in and around the areas of Stratford-upon-Avon and Mousehole in Cornwall she also travelled to Spain and Portugal in search of subjects for her plates. Gwen May was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and an accomplished wood engraver and watercolourist, exhibiting at the Royal Academy regularly in the pre-war years. A commemorative award for etching and engraving named after Gwen May is presented every year at the National Print Exhibition.
