Art Nouveau Silver Matchbox Holder, T. Hayes, 1892

This is an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Matchbox Holder from the Victorian era. It has a period Bryant & May empty matchbox inside. The oblong holder stands on four ball feet and the top has an embossed design of sweeping organic shapes surrounded by foliage with a circular blank cartouche in the centre.
The matchbox holder was made in Birmingham by silversmith Thomas Hayes and dates to 1892. Thomas Hayes registered his first mark at Birmingham’s assay office in 1887 and operated from premises in Spencer Street in the Jewellery Quarter. The firm was also registered in Chester. He produced a wide range of tableware, homeware and personal items. The company remained in business, latterly as T Hayes & Co, up until around 1910.
Condition is fair with just a small split above the foot in the corner of the front opening and a couple of pinholes in the top where high points have been polished through. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbox holder is 7.5cm / 2.9ins by 4.9cm / 1.9ins and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. Without the matchbox it weighs in at 30.0g / 1.06oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 40.1g / 1.4oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter s for 1892 and the T.H makers' mark for Thomas Hayes.
