This is a very charming watercolour portrait of Ninon de L'enclos (1620-1705) the celebrated French author, courtesan and patron of the arts. Ninon encouraged Moilere and Voltaire and she embodied libertinism in both theory and practise in her insistence on the equal rights of women and men to the pursuit of pleasure. The portrait is labelled beneath 'La Celebre Ninon' and is based on the 17th century oil painting by Louis Ferdinand Elle. The work appears to be in its original frame which has an attractive antique appearance with some small losses to the gesso.
This measures 54 cms by 47 cms including the frame. UK delivery is £20.
