Antique English Writing Box / Slope c.1860
A very handsome English Victorian writing box, with a Tunbridge Ware or Parquetry inlay surrounding a Mother of Pearl cartouche to the top, with a matching inlay to the front escutcheon housing the working lock and key.
Made from rich Cognac coloured Walnut the lid opens to reveal an original red tufted silk lining and a removal tray (which has been re-lined in a hand-marbled paper) with a compartment below.
The front folds down to reveal a drawer inset with a brass campaign or military style flush handle which is used to remove the integral writing slope of lap desk.
This in turn unfolds to reveal the leather writing surface with the top section opening to reveal more space for letters or stationery. There is also a removable pen tray (with space under) and a brass topped inkwell and a sloped section the other end for nibs, letter clips etc.
Victorian in era, dating to around 1860, the box measures 11 3/4" x 9 1/2" x 7" high while closed.
