An Exceptional Precision Regulator by Watson
An Exceptional Precision Regulator by William Watson of London c1805.
The simply beautiful case being veneered in cross grained walnut of the highest quality is of the early type so typical of these early pioneers of precision timekeeping. The case is simple, functional and stunning and has clearly been carefully looked after for over 200 years. The original glass is still retained in the long door that reveals its original ebony rod pendulum with long brass bob. The small driving weight is skilfully directed via two pullies to the rear corner of the case.
The large painted dial in the traditional “regulator” style is a very early easy to read with fine long hands and clear demarcations. These early painted dials are mounted upon a wooden supporting disc and would have been considerably more expensive than the usual silvered dials of this period.
The substantial movement with high pinion teeth counts and Harrison maintaining power to the barrel is beautifully made, the very small drop angles gives the motion on the second hand an almost sweep style movement. The independently suspended pendulum hangs from a very substantial bracket firmly attached to the backboard, This technique was the result of the quest for a true independently influence pendulum.
William Watson (1793-1805) is known to have traded from 190 Strand, London
