Alex. Rimington RBA 1854-1918 W/Colour Bordighera
We are offering for sale this lovely landscape watercolour by the Victorian Artist Alexander Wallace Rimington, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner, dated it '98 and inscribed it verso 'At Bordighera' with his name and address, as shown. The painting depicts figures crossing a simple wooden bridge over a stream. There is a man with a large carrier on his back with a small child and, about to cross the bridge are another couple of figures with three sheep. The stream is very tranquil and the trees along the bank are beautifully reflected in the still water.
Alexander Wallace Rimington 1854-1918, was a London landscape painter and etcher. He was educated at Clifton and studied in London and Paris. He exhibited from 1880 and visited Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Germany and Austria, where he lived for about a year in 1886. He was married to Evelyn Jane Rimington nee Whyley, who was also an exhibited artist. We are also currently listing a landscape by her.
In 1887, he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Painters Etchers and Engravers. In 1903 he was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists. An exhibition of his French and Pyrenean watercolours was held at the Fine Art Society in 1912.
Other than this exhibition, he exhibited 34 works at the Royal Academy, 681 at the Fine Art Society, 41 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 6 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour, 32 at the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers, 2 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute and various others. He is represented in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
He died in Selsey, Gloucestershire in 1918.
Auction results for works by this artist may be found at artprice 46, findartinfo 20, artnet 74 and arcadja 9. His paintings have realised prices in the upper hundreds.
The painting is nicely mounted with wash lines and is framed in a 5/8" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
