A Walnut and Inlay Longcase Clock with 10" dial
A Walnut and Inlay Longcase Clock with 10" dial by Richard Petit c1750
A lovely Georgian provincial longcase clock with a 10" dial, walnut and inlay case of a short dimension (202cm). The inlay depicting a floral swag and urn is of a good standard and must have been a commission piece for this clockmaker.
As can be seen, this antique clock was originally a 30 hour one handed antique clock, this is evidenced by the single quarter marked chapter ring , at some point in its life the clock has been upgraded to an eight day clock with two hands. This conversion has been done to a high standard using a fine early knopped pillar movement with rack striking. Although a "marriage" should be avoided if possible, II believe that this conversion is right and tells the story of a family clock that has been improved. This conversion would not have been done to increase its intrinsic value but to make a "high maintenance" clock that had to wound every day into a usable family piece. The cost of conversion would have been an expensive undertaking and it tells of the desire to keep family heirlooms usable.
The movement has been fully overhauled by me personally and comes with a full three year guarantee for your peace of mind.
Richard Pettit b1715 lived in the tiny village of New Sampford in Essex. The village is now called Little Sampford, The contrasting villages of Great and Little Sampford have a long history. Finds of worked flints at Great Sampford suggest a Neolithic site of some importance, scattered Bronze Age finds have been recovered and ditches probably associated with an Iron Age farmstead have been excavated. In both parishes Roman sites have been discovered, of buildings with heating systems and heavy tile roofs but considerably smaller than villas. These fit with the emerging picture of the Roman countryside being peppered with smaller farmsteads between the great estates of the villas. The river Pant runs through both parishes, and its name is a survival from the ancient brythonic tongue spoken before the Romans arrived that eventually became modern Welsh. Essex was one of the earliest Saxon kingdoms and this survival suggests some kind of contact allowing linguistic exchange between the resident Celts and incoming Saxons.
Great Sampford has two churches: the Baptist church, which also owns a small hall, and the Church of England Parish church, St Michael's. Little Sampford also has a church called St Mary the Virgin.
Also in the village is a primary school housing the village hall, a play area, a cricket ground and a public house.
Interestingly, the house that this clock was made in is still standing and is called The Clock house and can be visited today. on the wall of the house is a clock dedicated to Richard Petit 1778 ( possibly his death) With over twenty years experience in restoring and conserving clocks and working on some of the finest and complicated clocks for a select group of the best antique clock dealers in the country.
