A Superb 8-day Longcase Clock by Butler of Bolton
A fine quality and impressive Lancashire Georgian moon phase longcase clock. A detailed hood pediment with a swan neck surmounted by a Chinese pagoda with 3 wooden ball finials. Fluted hood and trunk side columns. A fine mahogany case with choice book matched trunk veneers with a Gothic Trunk door top. A re-entrant raised base panel and standing on the original ogee bracket feet. Dentil cornice mouldings below the hood. A high quality brass and silvered dial with lunar moon phases to the arch and signed 'James Butler Fecit Bolton'. Rococo cast corner spandrels and a well engraved dial centre with blued steel hands. A date aperture and seconds dial. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.
James Butler of Bolton is recorded in Loomes' 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of The World' book as born in 1757 and married to Alice in 1783. This example dates to circa 1780.
