A Stunning James II Burr Walnut Longcase clock
An absolutely stunning James II/ William of Orange fine figured walnut longcase clock by the famous Joseph Windmills (1640-1724). Joseph was considered one of the finest clockmakers in the late 17th century London, becoming the youngest warden of the worshipful company in 1699. He sat alongside the eminent Thomas Tompion and preceded him as Master in 1702. This particular antique clock with an incredibly rare concave “sunburst” within the base and matching quarter sunburst quadrants to the door. Late 17th century walnut antique clocks of this intrinsic quality and aesthetic appeal by famous makers are increasingly rare and hard to find. Clocks by Joseph Windmills can be found in many important public collections and museums around the world.
This clock case has been very carefully cleaned by painstakingly removing layers of dirt, dust and general grime to reveal its original patina that simply cannot be replicated.
The brass dial with exquisite engraved scrollwork to the arch frames the cartouche with Joseph Windmills London engraved within. The wheatear bordered dial is finished with Crown and Cherub spandrels and finely pierced hands. The Windmills feature of a strike/silent lever discreetly placed to the right hand side is operated via a simple lever.
The fine five knopped pillar movement with beautifully made wheelwork is typical of the quality expected from Joseph Windmills. The movement has been fully overhauled by me personally to ensure longevity in its operation and comes with a full three year guarantee for your peace of mind in your investment. With over twenty years experience in restoring and conserving clocks and working on some of the finest and complicated clocks for a select group of the best antique clock dealers in the country.
