A fine Flame Mahogany and inlay Longcase Clock by
A fine Flame Mahogany and inlay Longcase Clock by William Shakeshaft of Preston c1810, William Shakeshaft was born circa 1748 and died possibly around 1826. He was admitted as a freeman of the Smiths company in 1782 by Richard Lomax clerk. He was working in the Market Place Preston from 1818 to 1820.
The fine early Painted dial longcase clock with beautiful flame mahogany case with floral and scrollwork inlaid panels to the trunk. The square form hood displaying a “prince of Wales” feathers above the 12 o’clock position. With reeded columns and canted corners the well made case stands 7ft 6.
The early phase painted dial is pristine and does not look to have been restored, displaying age related crazing to the paint surface. The square dial having two subsidiary dials for date and sweep seconds is of the early “Arabic” numeral design with gilt spandrel corners and quarter markers. These early dials should not be mistaken for the later mass produced dials and these early ones would certainly have been more expensive than a brass equivalent at that time.
The fine movement has been fully overhauled by me personally and comes with a full three years guarentee
