Miniature English Fusee 4 Glass Bracket Clock
A delightful early Victorian English 4 glass timepiece by Purvis, Grosvenor Square.
The diminutive case standing a mere 8” tall is constructed of an oak carcass with well figured rosewood veneer, having glazed, brass lined, arched apertures throughout, a stepped top, brass linings to the canted corners and decorative inlay to the base, the whole upon four adjustable acorn feet.
The arched, silvered brass dial engraved with an offset Roman hour chapter with outer minutes, the blued steel hands of moon form above the single winding square and engraved below in a laurel wreath cartouche “ PURVIS, North Audley Street, Grosvenor Square.”
The 8 day, chain driven, single fusee movement of typical superlative quality for the period, having decoratively turned pillars, an anchor escapement with a brass pendulum rod and bob and well finished brass and steelwork throughout, the plain backplate with two substantial retaining brackets and pendulum lock, being engraved “Purvis, North Audley Street.”
This charming little timepiece belongs to a genre of English antique clock making produced towards the middle of the 19th century. Such antique clocks are noted for their Regency elegance and exquisite proportions, being constructed of the finest materials available and finished to the highest standard.
C. 1840 Height: 8″ / 20.5cm
