9” English Fusee Timepiece by W. Saunders 1879
We present for consideration, this scarce and outstanding 9” dial single chain fusee wall timepiece, by documented provincial antique clock maker, William Saunders, of 2 Chapel Street, Marylebone, Middlesex, London, where this clock would have been made.
Born in Rugeley, Staffordshire, 1846, into a wealthy farming family, Saunders obviously found his calling in horology, because by the age of 17, he was serving his clockmaking apprentiship in Clerkenwell, London, under the supervision of master clockmaker George Moore. Once his apprentiship had been successfully completed, Saunders seemingly decided to remain in London to ply and develop his trade.
On the 1871 Census, Saunders is recorded as living at 15 Gloucester Street, Pimlico, London, so had relocated to Marylebone sometime before 1879. It is also known, that at some stage around c1881, he turned most of his focus to producing high-quality pocket watches. Saunders never married during his long lifetime, passing away in 1930 at his residence in Brampton Grove, in the affluent area of Hendon, Middlesex, he was 84 years old.
This antique clocks hand-turned roundhead Mahogany face and boxed cabinet, (both with appealing, aged patination), the box has a hinged inspection door located on the side of the box and an operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original 9” metal dial with black Roman numerals and Saunders details, finished with its original pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel, incorporating a canted silvered brass fillet to the interior.
The clock benefits from its original and high-quality 8-day chain driven single fusee movement. It has turned pillars and rectangular plates exhibiting the famed “Peerless” trademark of horological engineer Mathias Bauerle and serial numbered ‘183365J’. It also comes with a 63mm diameter pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
