8-day Oak Longcase clock by Coster, Henley
A good original 1830s 8-day longcase clock by James Coster, Henley-on-Thames.
The well-proportioned oak case is of even colour, with a well-fitting locking trunk door with brass escutcheon. The hood door is flanked with reeded pilasters, with brass capitals and bases. Although not drilled for finials, the style of the hood would lend itself well to three brass finials, if desired.
The restored break-arch 12-inch cream painted dial is delicately painted, the corners with shields bearing anchors within golden foliate scrolls, and signed with the maker's name to the arch. It has two subsidiary dials for seconds and date-work, each with original hands to match the minute and hour hand.
8-day rack striking movement, striking the hours on a bell, to be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
James Coster appears in the 1839 Robson's Commercial Directory of Beds, Bucks & Oxon trade directory as a watchmaker working at Hart Street, Henley upon Thames.
Height 82" (209cms)
