19th.c. Taxidermy Duck c.1880
Late 19th.c. taxidermy duck c.1880. Good specimen of a female Shoveler duck (Anas clypeata) with its distinctive broad bill and pale blue and iridescent green flashes on the wings. Presented amongst grasses and rocks, behind glass in its original wooden case with gilded slip frame and brass fixings.
Interestingly there is on the rear of the case a handwritten label identifying it as having been shot on the River Clwyd in North Wales. This note appears to be added to the bottom of a signed letter from the acclaimed Victorian taxidermist Henry Shaw of Shrewsbury (1812-1887) promising his ‘best and prompt attention’ to the specimen. Shaw’s patron’s included museums and several members of the British aristocracy which allowed him access to some notable collections and rare specimens. During his career Shaw is believed to have prepared three specimens of the already extinct Great Auk.
Dimensions: width 19″, depth 8½”, height 15″ Please contact us for more images, delivery and shipping quotes.
