18thc Oil Portrait Of An Aristocratic Gentleman
I am pleased to offer this beautifully executed portrait of an aristocratic looking gentleman who has been eloquently depicted in a russet coat, white silk vest edged in gold thread. His hand is neatly tucked into his vest, a common pose often seen in gentlemanly portraits of the 18th century.
There is a good portrayal of character in the facial features, something that portraitists strove to achieve. His piercing blue eyes have been sharply rendered and the ‘half smile’ imbues the sitter with a warm character.
There is lovely impasto on the lace collar which is a pleasing touch as this is so often an element no longer present on paintings of this age (having been flattened in the restoration process).
The artist has incorporated the sitter’s coat of arms on the portrait and the reverse contains the following inscription and signature:
IDENTIFICATION of Artist & Sitter.
" Mr Christian August Helffrich b. March 10, 1747. G A Eger p (inxit)"
This possibly refers to Georg Adam Eger (1727-1808) who was a German Court painter, born in Murrhardt Germany.
The sitter has yet to be the subject of finer monograph, a task perhaps avoided by art historians due to the lack of any archive, notebooks or memoranda, which after research has not produced any further information.
