18th Oil Portrait After Rembrandt Of Aechje Claesdr

CLEARANCE SALE : REDUCED FROM £2650 To ONLY £2250
This fine example offered for sale is a very accurate portrait after Rembrandts original and is estimated to date around mid 18th Century, also accurately bearing the artist name ‘ Rembrandt f 1634 ‘ to the right of the sitters shoulder as seen by the viewer.
The original portrait of Aechje Claesdr who was 84 years of age at the time she was painted, is on display in the National Gallery under [ Ref NG775 ] and is painted on an oak panel being of the Baroque Period.
The oval format of all these portraits was very fashionable in Amsterdam at the time. - Rembrandt, Portrait of Aechje Claesdr is one of the several oval portraits fashionable at that time.
The masterfully executed black dress and white ruff complement the expressive countenance of the old woman. The pigment analysis revealed a limited palette consisting of red and yellow ochres, bone black, lead white, and vermilion.
ABOUT THE SITTER [ Aechje Claesdr ]
This sitter has recently been identified as Aechje Claesdr., widow of the Rotterdam brewer, Jan Dammaszn. Pesser. She had a son, Dirck Jansz Pesser who along with his wife sat for Rembrandt to paint their Lorain’s, both undertaken in the same year. -
ABOUT THE ARTIST :
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) Rembrandt was a Dutch draughtsman, painter and printmaker. An innovative and prolific master in three media, he is generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history.
Unlike most Dutch masters of the 17th century, Rembrandt''''s works depict a wide range of style and subject matter, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and historical scenes, biblical and mythological themes as well as animal studies.
His contributions to art came in a period of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age, when Dutch art (especially Dutch painting), although in many ways antithetical to the Baroque style that dominated Europe, was extremely prolific and innovative, and gave rise to important new genres. Like many artists of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Jan Vermeer of Delft, Rembrandt was also an avid art collector and dealer.
Rembrandt''''s ability to capture a likeness and a sense of the sitter''''s character sets him apart from many of his contemporaries. In particular his portrayal of old people, including himself as he aged, was always disarmingly honest. With its loose application of paint this work shows the painter''''s acute observation and imaginative insight into the mood and the personality of the sitter.
