18th Century oak long case clock by William Hill Grandfather clock William Hill %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A very fine 18th Century oak eight day long case clock by William Hill of Walsingham (Norfolk), Circa 1760. The brass dial of this antique clock is most interesting and features a “penny moon” where one would normally expect a seconds ring, a conventional date mouth and a further aperture indicating the lunar date, of note are the fine urn and dolphin spandrels. The case has elegant proportions and it’s of fine colour and pantination , it is predominantly made from well figured oak decorated with walnut crossbanding, there is a notable fine raised panel to the base.

William Hill is recorded as working between 1743 – 1764, he had a shop on the quay at Wells which he only opened on Wednesdays and Saturdays, perhaps not surprisingly he was declared bankrupt on 22nd December 1764.
