18th Century Baroque Winged Cherubs or Putti.
Beautiful pair of 18th century baroque winged cherubs.
These delightful carved softwood cherubs retain their original polychrome and gilding. (This is quite rare as often cherubs were repainted)
They have extremely agreeable expressions on their dear little faces, and are probably Tyrolean or South German in origin.
Designed to be seen from below - they would look rather witty displayed around a door frame to visually 'announce' people into the room.
Each cherub has a stout hanging ring, so they are ready to be hung.
Condition The softwood of the cherubs has old, extinct woodworm, which has nevertheless been treated, cosmetically filled on displaying surfaces and paintmatched with the original polychrome.
The original polychrome has some paint loss and this has been left as an authentic aged surface.
Both cherubs have some restoration to their wings and fritting to the wing tips which have been paint blended to be unobtrusive.
Measurements

Height 22cm (8.5ins)
