1855 French Gilt Striking Mantel Clock.
Circa 1855 Louis XVI style French striking mantel clock, the embossed gilt drumhead shaped case depicting the season of Spring and new life. With gilt crafted gardening tools underneath the bottom of the drumhead and a pair of mating birds on top of the drumhead, (with a bird nesting theme also replicated in the exquisite Sèvres style, hand painted porcelain panel).
The clocks garniture is undamaged and breath taking, with high-level, hand-crafted gilt floral detail and related embellishment. The white enamelled dial offers both Roman hour numerals and Arabic minute numerals, finished with its original pair of bespoke pierced gilt brass hands. The dial is then protected by convex, bevelled glaze set in a beautifully moulded gilt bezel bordered with beading, (as is the lower painted panel). The clocks ornate and decorative breakfront plinth is then mounted on 4 x elegant cabriole feet.
the clock has a high-quality circular 8-day pendulum driven French movement, this one, with an outside count wheel regulating its striking mechanism, the movement being accessed via a rear hinged bevelled glazed door (also mounted in a brass bezel). The backplate is stamped with two serial numbers. The movement strikes the hours and half-hours on its nickel ‘ting bell’ and comes with its pendulum and a brass winding key.
A stunning period French mantel clock of eye-catching proportion!!
