17th century Italian painting, Saint John Baptist
Italian school of the first half of the 17th century. Artwork attributable to the painter Tomaso Pombioli (1579-1636), lacking authentication. He trained in the workshop of Gervasio Gatti from Cremona and was influenced by the Renaissance artists active in Lombardy-Veneto in the area between Crema, Bergamo and Brescia. Oil painting on canvas depicting a splendid Saint John the Baptist immersed in a lush landscape. We find some of its iconographic elements such as the camel hair dress, the bowl and a splendid lamb which prefigures the sacrifice of Christ. Note the sweetness with which the saint is represented, the quality of the drapery and the masterful use of chiaroscuro in the complexion. 19th century frame in carved, painted and gilded wood, with some signs of aging (see photo). Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and recovery of color in small spots, overall in excellent state of conservation. Sight size H 88 x W 116 cm.
