16thC Welsh Antique Turned Chair / Turners Chair
A rare find. This is only the third such chair of this type that we have ever had in stock.
This example has been sourced from a private collection.
Richard Bebb in his book "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950 - A Cultural History of Craftsmanship and Design" writes that the earliest recorded "turned" chair in the British Isles is situated at Hereford Cathedral and dates to the late 12th/13th Century. The majority of surviving examples originate from Glamorgan or Monmouthshire and Bebb's book refers to a date of production between the 15th and 16th Centuries.
Our example was found in Norfolk, England but has all the characteristics of a Welsh chair being constructed of ash and oak. Given the size of this chair, it was probably made for an adolescent or young adult.
With shaped cresting rail with supports radiating from the single turned rear upright. Wonderful downswept bobbin-turned arms lead to the front with turned uprights flanking either side of the trapezoid shaped seat. All thee legs are united by stretchers.
Superb colour. This is a very sound chair and is ready to go.
Condition - The panelled seat has been replaced historically to the front and rear. These repairs have a great degree of age in their own right.
Dimensions : Height (Back) 29 1/2" x Max width (outer arm to outer arm) 22 1/4" x Max Depth 14" x Seat Height 15"
