Description:
Here we have for sale a good quality antique German 16" mahogany Winterhalder & Hofmeier timepiece railway station round dial wall clock, which has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now in good working order.

This antique clock features a beautiful mahogany case, with a moulded brass bezel, a pendulum access door on the underside and a mechanism-viewing door on the right hand side that allows you to view the mechanism whilst in operation. The mahogany dial is secured to the case by four wooden pegs. The mahogany case has been wax polished to revive the wonderful colour and patination of the grain in the timber. This clock features a “deep dish” case design. On the back of the clock is a bracket to attach the clock to the wall.

This clock houses a genuine and top quality single brass barrel spring driven Winterhalder & Hofmeier timepiece mechanism. A timepiece mechanism is not designed to chime or strike. The movement has been professionally restored and serviced to the highest standard and is now in excellent mechanical order, ensuring this clock is reliable and keeps good time. The pendulum length, which is attached to the mechanism by accessing the clock from the door below, can be adjusted to allow you to regulate the speed of the antique clock. The clock comes with a key, which is used to wind the mechanism through the centre of the face dial.

This clock face features an ivory colour tin dial with black Roman numerals and elegant shaped hour and minute hand. A hinged solid brass bezel houses the glass face that protects the tin dial and face whilst in operation. The brass bezel opens on a right hand hinge to allow you to adjust or set the time. There is a catch to the back of the clock that locks the brass bezel in place and stops it from accidentally swinging open.

This clock has brass levelling lugs and pins, which are attached to each side of the clock and are designed to give the clock traction against the wall and allow the angle of the case to be adjusted away from the wall if the clock is hung on wall which is not vertically straight, such as in old buildings.

The clock looks great in a variety of rooms from and also in either a traditional or contemporary setting. This truly is a very beautiful wall clock of classic styling and quality construction. It will become a member of the family after not too long! So don't miss out pn your chance to own a lovely clock.

Provenance:
Winterhalder & Hofmeier were considered the finest clockmakers in the Victorian era. They were based in several towns in Germany’s Black Forest region. The company was established in 1810 by Thomas Winterhalder in Friedenweiler.

Matthäus Winterhalder (1799–1863) took over the workrooms in 1830, and in 1850, when relative and clockmaker, Anton Hofmeier, joined the company, Winterhalder & Hofmeier was born. Towards the latter half of the eighteenth century, Winterhalder & Hofmeier produced various types of antique clocks that were of very high quality in their factories.

At the height of their success, satellite factories began to spring up, and by the mid and late 19th century they were producing clocks of premier quality. The entire family was involved in this industry. Hans Winterhalder founded a company called HAWINA Clock Company with 800 employees devoted purely to the exportation of Winterhalder clocks to England, Russia and America during the first decade of the 20th century.

Due to the withering effects of Nazi Germany's racial and religious attacks during the mid 1930's the Winterhalder family was unable to obtain bank credit.

In 1937, after many years of superb quality clock making, arguably the finest in Germany, the firm closed its doors for good. The movements produced by this firm around the turn of the 20th century are often mistaken for English movements because of their fine quality.
