12” Carved Fusee Dial Timepiece by William Gray. %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We present for consideration, this fabulous carved 12’ dial fusee wall timepiece from the early Victorian period, by William Gray of Market Place, Leicester. (Clock and watchmaker, and later in life Jeweller).

Born 1812 in Leicester, Gray served his apprentiship with Leicester master watch and clockmaker William Henfrey, and after he’d served his time, sought to set-up his own horological business soon afterwards. This is also confirmed by the 1841 Census, which records that Gray was a self-employed watch and clockmaker, operating from Market Place in Leicester, from where this timepiece would have been made.

Gray became very successful in his profession, remaining at Market Place throughout his entire working life. In c1865, he did however move his private residency, to the affluent London Road neighbourhood of Leicester where he lived with his family until his death in 1895, aged 83 years old. He had all but retired from watch and clockmaking by c1860, becoming a well-known prestige jeweller specialising in gold and silver.

The antique clock has a decorative hand-carved foliate pierced Mahogany surround with boxed cabinet, (the box having been renovated to a very high standard). The box has a hinged inspection door located on its side and a turn-catch regulator door located at its bottom. The antique clocks original metal dial has black Roman numerals with Gray’s details, finished with its pair of Spade hands. The clocks dial is then protected by glaze mounted in a brass bezel.

The clock benefits from a high quality 8-day single fusee driven movement set between 4mm thick shouldered plates and knopped pillars and comes with its 73mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
