Description

Simply gorgeous tall pair of Doulton Lambeth Art Nouveau vases by Eliza Simmance c1895. Of baluster form with waisted neck and everted, fluted rim. Beautifully executed tubelined Art Nouveau design of lilies against a finely decorated ground. Design repeated front and back with rich earth colours between showing a touch of iridescence. Impressed Doulton Lambeth mark to based. Signed with Eliza Simmance's monogram (E within an S) together with artist's and assistant's monograms: BN for Bessie Newbery, ddd for Miss D Douthwaite and other unknown.  The vases measure 44 cm in height.
These vases are in excellent overall condition commensurate with age with no crazing, chips or restoration. One vase with hairline to rim which looks to be from when originally made - very difficult to see on outside of rim, and not obvious on inside when on display. Hairline has been consolidated and the vase rings when tapped. Otherwise in excellent condition. Please see further images on our website as these form an important part of the description.

Eliza Simmance, one of the earliest artist engaged, worked at Doulton Lambeth as an Artist and Designer between 1873 and 1928. She quickly became recognised as an original and versatile designer - winning many high awards at international exhibitions. Her work remains highly collectible. Bessie Newbery was listed in 1882 as a Junior Assistant but her talent was recognised and she was promoted to Senior Assistant. By 1911 she was working as a Supervisor and Artist, designing original work c1914 to 1924. Miss Douthwaite worked at Doulton as an assistant during the late 19th and early 20th century.
