Description

Superb late George IV rosewood Davenport desk c1830. Sliding desk top with pierced gallery and original tooled leather inset writing slope and small drawer fitted for pen and ink opening to the right-hand side. Hinged slope opens to reveal a compartment with two drawers above two dummy drawers. Below the sliding desk, the cabinet section houses stationery slides to both sides and a bank of four graduated drawers to the right with four dummy drawers to the opposing side. Decorative flat pillars to front and back topped by scroll carved capitals and stylised acanthus pedestals. Raised on four carved tulip bun feet. Free-standing with veneered back and cabinet top revealed when desk section is slid forward – this piece thus works in the round with the slide positioned forward or back.
