Description

An early George III mahogany chair in the Chippendale style c1760. The chair back has a shaped cresting rail and moulded sides with pierced strapwork splat. The carved splat is of interlacing ribbons with scroll carved detail to the C-scrolls. Further carved detailing to the centre of the cresting rail and top corners. Parallel square front legs with inner chamfers and outer corner ovolo mouldings continue round the seat rails. Drop-in seat with period needlepoint. Height to top of back-rail is 95 cm. Maximum width 54 cm. Height to top of seat is 44 cm, depth of seat 43 cm.
Chair is exceptional condition when considering its age. Historic knocks, wear and repairs as is to be expected with genuine antique furniture. All solid mahogany frames are sound and all joints solid. The chair retains its aged patination. Drop-in seat is currently upholstered with period needlepoint which is faded and has some small losses however we were reluctant to remove this. Ideal for restoration of the needlework or for a small additional cost, we can re-upholster its seat in your choice of fabric. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.

This chair is identical to one illustrated in Herbert Cescinsky’s “English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century” (Vol 2 fig.255 p.240) attributed to Chippendale designs.
