A Pair of Late 20th Century Walnut Inlaid Side or Night Tables by Brights of Nettlebed

A finely made pair of concave side tables by Brights of Nettlebed, a respected family firm renowned for quality English furniture since 1866. Dating from the late 20th century, these tables combine classic English design with excellent modern cabinetmaking.
Each table is veneered in walnut with figured elm panels, the rectangular tops shaped with protruding angular corners and a concave front. The edges are crossbanded in rosewood, providing a refined contrast that emphasises the crisp, high-quality inlay work.
Below the top sits a paneled frieze with a single drawer, fitted with a finely made handle to offer discreet, practical storage. The paneled legs, also veneered in rosewood, are united by an under-tier, giving extra display or storage space while strengthening the overall structure. The legs taper towards the base and terminate in brass feet, lending both stability and a distinguished finish.
Balancing function and design, these versatile pieces work equally well as lamp tables, side tables or nightstands. Their traditional craftsmanship and distinctive form allow them to sit comfortably in both classic and contemporary interiors.
This model is still in production today and can be ordered new from Brights of Nettlebed at a current price of £2,190 each, which underlines both the quality and continuing desirability of the design.
Walnut has long been considered one of the finest timbers for furniture, valued for its deep, chocolate-brown tones, elegant grain and durability. It brings immediate warmth and understated luxury to any interior.
Although this is not the type of piece I usually offer, I was particularly struck by the standard of craftsmanship, the sharpness of the inlay and the strong decorative presence of the design. I acquired these tables from a large private estate in Surrey, together with a shorter console table, a long console table, a coffee table and a commode, all in matching walnut with identical inlay and the same high level of workmanship.
These are timeless, adaptable tables, ideal for a living room, bedroom or study. Elegant yet practical, they are designed to be both used and admired, and to give pleasure for many years to come.
