A Nineteenth Century Lignum Fishing Priest

Photos

Description

A handsome, well turned fishing priest, so called because it was used to administer the last rites to fish that were to kept for consumption rather than being returned to live another day. A humanitarian act. This one is turned from lignum vitae, the heaviest wood, the only one that doesn't float. It needed to be heavy to be efficient, anything lighter would have a slug of lead let into the end that did the business.
