Description

Philips 'Standard' 13.5 inch Terrestrial Globe on a turned oak base.

This is a very rare table globe from the British company Philips showing European borders immediately prior to the outbreak of WW2. It can be dated with confidence to 1939 as both Austria and Czechoslovakia have been annexed by Germany, and globe production for the retail market was suspended during the war years.

The globe is constructed from two pasteboard hemispheres with hand-applied composite paper gores, joined at the equator. It features a turned and stepped oak base with a rich mid-brown finish, an aluminium half meridian with aluminium polar caps and finials, and a nickel plated brass time dial at the North Pole.

The map is in lovely original condition.

Overall this is a stunning globe providing a rare snapshot of a pivotal moment in world history.
