Victorian Silver Bowl, Edward K Reid, London, 1882
Here we have a superb quality Victorian Sterling Silver Two Handled Bowl or Porringer with a lightly gilded interior. The bowl is decorated in the Gothic style with oak leaves against a satinised background rising up the lower part of the body from a round pedestal base decorated with ivy, whilst the upper part of the body has been panelled. The two scroll handles are surmounted by bird's heads. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The bowl is made in London by top silversmith Edward Ker Reid and dates to 1882. It was retailed by Gilliam & Co of 6 Serle Street in Lincoln's Inn Fields, the heart of the City of London's legal district. The Reid family business was started in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1778 but later the family split with one part carrying on the Newcastle business and the other part moving to London. The family was intermarried with that of renowned silversmith Edward Barnard.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just some rubbing to the gilded interior through much cleaning down the years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl measures 13cm / 5.1ins from handle to handle, 9.7cm / 3.8ins in diameter and stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs a substantial 122.5g / 4.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for LOndon, the date letter G for 1882, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the E.K.R makers' mark for Edward Ker Reid. In addition there is the retail stamp for Gilliam of Serle St, London.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the bowl.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
