George V Silver Bird Claw Sugar Tongs, 1921
Here we have a good quality pair of George V Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The tongs have a fan and thread design on each arm and end in bird claw grips with scale decoration. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tongs are made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Cooper Brothers & Sons and date to 1921. Founded in 1866 as electroplaters, they began producing silverware in the 1890s and became very well known for their high quality cutlery and flatware. The firm carried on into the 1980s before being bought out.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 9.4cm / 3.7ins long and weigh a respectable 17.0g / 0.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of one arm, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter d for 1921 and the C.B & S in a shield makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd. In addition there is a registered design number of 605905, which dates the original design to 1912/13.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
