Early 20th Cent. Silver Plate Sauce Cruet Set
This is an unusual Early 20th Century Silver Plate 3 Piece Sauce Cruet Set. The set consists of two sauce boats on oval bases with C-shape handles and a circular based bowl all on a trefoil shaped stand which sits on three ball feet and has a circular handle at the top of a tall straight stem.
The set was made in Sheffield by silversmiths and electroplaters Martin, Hall & Co and dates to the period between around 1900 and 1930. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Overall condition is good with no dings or dents. There is some wear to the plate at the bottom of the bowl where spoons have scraped away over a long period of time and just a couple of spots of plate loss in the bottoms of the two sauce boats. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each sauce boat is 13cm / 5.1ins from lip to handle, 6cm / 2.3ins across and 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. The bowl is 8.8cm / 3.4ins in diameter and 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. The stand is 17.3cm / 6.8ins front to back, 15.2cm / 5.9ins across and 17.3cm / 6.8ins high. All together the set weighs in at 725g / 25.6oz.
The underside of the base is stamped EPNS for silver plate and M H & Co for Martin, Hall & Co inside a lozenge.
